Building Codes & Compliance

Route: Integrates across /chat, /algorithms, and /journey
Purpose: Purple8 AI Architect continuously cross-references your design models against a dense knowledge graph of local, regional, and international building codes, ensuring compliance continuously rather than retroactively.

Unlike conventional BIM tools that require you to manually export models to a third-party model checker (like Solibri or Navisworks) or hire an external compliance consultant, Purple8 inherently understands the rules of the built environment because the building codes are ingested directly into its neuro-symbolic knowledge graph alongside your project data.

1. How Building Codes are Digested

Purple8 does not simply do text-searches on PDFs of the IBC (International Building Code) or regional variants. Using DocIntel (Document Intelligence), it performs semantic ingestion:

  1. Ingestion & Parsing: Regulatory documents (PDFs, online regulatory portals) are ingested via the DocIntel pipeline.
  2. Rule Extraction (Semantic Triplets): The AI extracts explicit constraints. For example, "Corridors in Group R-2 occupancies must be at least 44 inches wide" is translated directly into queryable graph rules:
    • (:Occupancy {type: "R-2"}) -[:REQUIRES_WIDTH {min: 44, unit: "inch"}]-> (:Space {type: "Corridor"})
  3. Continuous Updates: Purple8's graph can be updated specifically for local municipalities, ingesting zoning laws, setbacks, and localized fire safety codes.

2. Where & How Codes are Used

A. Proactive Advice in AI Chat

As you design, the AI acts as a digital code consultant.

  • Querying Constraints: You can ask the AI Chat, "What is the maximum travel distance to a fire exit for this layout?" The AI will interpret the current Graph (knowing the building is a Type II-B construction, Business occupancy) and instantly retrieve the exact code stipulation (e.g., 200 feet, or 300 feet if fully sprinklered) complete with a citation to the source code section.
  • Generative Compliance: When asking the LAD engine to generate layouts, the parameters fed to the generation algorithms are automatically constrained by the local code nodes in the graph. It won't generate a bathroom that violates ADA accessibility clearances.

B. Automated Cross-Checking in Algorithms

When you run Phase 8 Algorithms (e.g., Space Syntax, Egress Pathfinding), the system overlays code compliance logic.

  • Egress & Safety: The pathfinding algorithm physically traces routes through your building's geometry (imported via IFC or created in LAD). It checks if every single point in a room is within the maximum travel distance defined by the digested fire codes.
  • Spatial Requirements: Algorithms scan the graph to ensure spaces meet minimum square footage, have adequate natural light/ventilation percentages based on the room type, and meet plumbing fixture counts based on occupancy loads.

C. The Journey (Auditability)

In the Journey pipeline, compliance checks are treated as verifiable milestones.

  • Stage Gating: You cannot progress from Design Development (Stage 4) to Technical Design (Stage 5) without passing the automated compliance algorithms.
  • Verifiable Audit Trail: Every time a compliance algorithm is run, the result is hashed and appended to the Journey ledger. If a fire-strategy issue is caught and overridden, the WHO, WHEN, and WHY are recorded.

3. Supported Code Frameworks (Out-of-the-Box)

While the Document Intelligence pipeline allows you to ingest any custom zoning text or project-specific brief, the system comes pre-initialized with foundational knowledge from major frameworks:
